I've been mulling over the apparent disapproval that our present administration has against the anti-torture bill, which is being proposed by one of their own party members. I've talked to many people about this, and I constantly get told the same thing, "...they do far worse to us..."

This bothers me on many different levels. First and foremost, it bothers me on a moral level. I have never borne witness to a case of torture or an unlawful order in my time in the military. However, if I was witness to or ordered to do something immoral or illegal I would bring it to the attention of the people in charge. I believe most of the people I work with would. Torture is immoral. It embodies everything that is unamerican.

Actually it makes me so upset I can't think straight. For some reason the religious right keeps popping into my mind. How can someone proclaim themselves as the moral majority and support such things as torture, war and the death penalty?

Well, this soldier is signing off to go back to performing his patriotic duty...

When will the rest of the nation step up to the plate and perform theirs?

yeah you tell em Jerry!

The problem is that Americans have gotten too content with themselves. They feel safer cuz 'it is over there'. HOWEVER! Once something like that hits home, it's all over. Suddenly Liberal America gets all uppity and gets involved when they should not. How do they know what they need and want?

Like the words of Morgan Freeman playing God in Bruce Almighty, "Since when did people know what they wanted?"

The average American will never do their Patriotic duty... they will forever think that someone else will cover down and pull their slack. This is one of many issues that are distroying our society. Americans will forever think only of ourselves until something happens on our soil. Then we get all "Patriot" for awhile, but this again fades away so that the public can get their Starbucks. Torture? People will forever torture others, physically or mentally. It's a fact of life, the bully in school wanting some sadistic satisfaction, or the crazied leader of a country wanting control...

Yeah. It pisses me off. You know, I joined the Army knowing I disagreed with this war. I thought I should experience so I knew the truth and the 'why'. I still disagree with this 'war' and I personally think the big boss on Pennsylvania Avenue is profiting somehow. Blessed be the day we get a new president with a higher IQ AND compassion. May not ever happen, but one can wish.
